What are these colored flags on my property?
The law requires everyone who plans to dig, be it for a new utility service or simply to plant a tree or set a new mailbox, to call for a mark-out of the utilities in the area where they proposed to dig. The public utility companies use a color coded system for identifying the type of service located underground. When the utility company marks out their utility main and your utility connection, they will use flags and paint marks in the color associated with their particular utility service. Learn what colors you can expect to see when a mark-out of utilities is made near your property.
